jarbabyj: THE BLOOM COUNTY APPRECIATION THREAD

I renamed my personal journal "The Continuing Story of Mortimer Dipthong" because I re-read Tales Too Ticklish To Tell last night for the 50,000th time. I know a ton of us love Bloom County.

Favorite Strips? Quotes? Characters? Anyone have icons?

I've said this in other places, but I went to school at the Univ of Iowa..where Breathed originally started writing Bloom County. There are plenty of Iowa City references scattered among the strips. There is a "farewell" drawing from Breathed hanging in the Iowa City Public Library that features Opus laying on the Pentacrest musing about all the things that he will miss about Iowa City..except the water: It tastes like Spic-n-Span.

FTR, I own two Opus penguins, one is a Reindeer Opus.

I'm looking at my Opus in Shower Cap right now, on my shelf of treasures. I love him so much. Shower cap, holiday inn towel and bow tie. Perfect!

politzania: Billy and the Boingers!

Ah - who could forget Bill the Cat and his electric tongue...

*And* I own a laserdisc copy of "A Wish for Wings that Work" - neener neener neener!

:: makes mental note to break out the Bloom County books & the aforementioned LD when she gets home ::

Well, Betty Boop is my all-time fave. She's adorable!

Calvin and Hobbes, of course. Classic surrealism and genuine humor in an intelligent form. Rare.

davew0071: My bad!

I didn't realize this was only Bloom County. Oops. Maybe I'll start a generic cartoon character appreciation thread.

I was always a Steve Dallas fan. He was just so obnoxious, in comparison to how nice all the other characters was, that I had to root for him just to be contrary. My particular favorite strip detailed Steve's babyhood and showed him drinking out of his bottle, taking a sniff and bellowing, "WHERE'S THE BOURBON?"

Classic.

That's what made it so great when his brain was reversed by aliens.

I miss Berke Breathed. Until that 'Outland' debacle, he was nothing short of briliant.

Or perchance brilliant. Whichever.

Some great lines from that strip.
